Q. Why do you think sharks have such a negative reputation, and how can we change that perception? What misconception would you like to dispel?

a. Hollywood has had a significant role in shaping sharks' negative reputation, especially with the film Jaws. While it's true that sharks are predators, they are also essential for maintaining the balance of our oceans by controlling the population of prey species. Without them, it would disrupt the entire marine food web. Their presence is far more valuable when they are alive than dead. And they are cute, beautiful, ocean heroes: protecting them is protecting our marine ecosystems.

Q. Can you share a personal encounter with sharks that had an impact on you?

a. The main reason I'm now a shark advocate is due to a shark accident. I was bitten by a reef shark in Cuba, which forever changed my relationship with the ocean and with sharks. Fortunately, I suffered no serious long-term effects, but the experience left me with a true sense of gratitude. By learning more about this accident and about these super creatures, I discovered that sharks have an essential role in the ecosystem and that they are in serious danger. We kill over 100 million sharks annually, while fewer than 10 humans die from shark encounters each year. I want to use my story and personal experience to encourage a new perspective on sharks and spread a message of coexistence. Without sharks, we don’t have an ocean and without an ocean, we lose ourselves.

Q. For those who fear sharks, what would you say to help them overcome that fear?

a. Once you learn more about sharks, you'll discover the magnificent creatures they truly are and how vital they are to sustaining our oceans. Rather than fearing sharks, I am more concerned about losing them. Their role in maintaining the balance of marine ecosystems is crucial, and their decline could have far-reaching consequences for our planet. In fact, more people die each year from mosquito bites than from shark encounters! Understanding and appreciating sharks can transform your fear into a desire to protect these magnificent animals.
